Uncorked Asheville

Warning, this email will make you hungry...

In a rush?! Don't miss our guide to delicious Thai food in Asheville.

Good Morning,

We enjoyed a gorgeous trip to Greenville, SC while getting my GI infusion. With temps in the 70's, it felt like a glimpse of spring. I'm here for it.

I had to share these great places we visited:

Us at Gather GVL (and pink mocktail below), Tom at A20, and Curean's charcuterie menu

  • Gather GVL - Did you know Greenville has an outdoor food hall?! We did not until we saw it in GVLtoday. They have everything from pizza, açaí bowls, and cheesesteaks to sushi, burgers, and mulled wine. We'd roast outside here in the summer, but it is great right now. They have heaters for the colder months.
  • Augusta Twenty - A20 Market - Attached to a boutique clothing store, get your Beauty & Beast on at this gorgeous coffee shop with bookshelves and ladders. It's SO sweet, and the staff is wonderful. Pistachio latte for me... I took this latte to my infusion so my hyperthyroid heart rate was 100. Whoops. You can also walk to Gather GVL from here.
  • Curean - We didn’t want to drive back to Asheville during rush hour, so I popped on Resy and snagged a time for this gorgeous brick interior-restaurant. We built a charcuterie board with a checklist. I’ve been waiting to go here forever, and it was excellent, including the wine selection... They also have items like bone marrow, chicken, and beef tartare. We couldn't resist the beets, hummus, and carrots. Our charcuterie had lamb, prosciutto, fig jam, NC honey, and olives.

Best Thai Food In Asheville (& A Note On Fake Bloggers and AI)

Even writing about Thai food makes me hungry. We order a lot of Thai takeout.

I originally wrote this post in January 2021 with a few updates (one of the first out there) - but it was pillaged and plundered by copycat and AI bloggers trying to make a quick buck on ads. Sigh. It's only getting worse with more funding going toward unregulated AI. Watching my good/ethical/real blogging friends throw in the towel is gutwrenching. AI overviews and stolen content devastate businesses like mine.

Just know here at Uncorked Asheville, we eat the food, do the things, and write from our hearts; we didn't create our site mimicking and stealing someone else's (yes, that happens a lot). This is why even if I look like the Walking Dead, I try to ensure we are in a few photos. Sometimes, I don't care if there are typos because that shows you we are human.

*And please be careful on Facebook; a lot of those very large "Growing up or History in North Carolina"-like groups are run by fake admins... locked profiles from accounts not in the U.S. trying to swindle some cash with Facebook's engagement incentives (and loads of stolen content; mine included). It's getting so bad. Don't "donate" to the one quilt that has been shown by twenty different people with a ridiculous URL with proceeds going nowhere near NC... I just saw a fake AI photo saying "This is Chimney Rock" with a rock in the shape of a chimney.*

Rant over, so...

🍛 From your favorite noodle dishes to healthy/fresh rolls, Thai fried onion rings, and the best soups, these are just a few of our favorite Thai food places in Asheville, NC:

Pad Thai Bee Thai Kitchen
Pad See Ew Bee Thai Kitchen
Pad Thai at Pad Thai Asheville
Suwana's takout fresh roll

Pad See Ew & Pad Thai from Bee Thai Kitchen, Pad Thai from Pad Thai Asheville, and a takeout fresh roll from Suwana's

🥢 Thai Pearl – In a spectacular West Asheville space, Chef May brings it with her ginger soup, Thai fried onion rings, papaya salad, Pad See Ew, and more. This is Tom's top pick.

🥢 Bee Thai Kitchen – In Downtown Asheville’s former Little Bee Thai, go for the lunch specials. Think one entree and one appetizer for $15+. This is a great local spot just outside of the main DT walking area. They might be my top pick along with Suwana's.

🥢 DTK Thai Kitchen – As North Asheville residents, this is our go-to Thai restaurant for takeout (along with Siam Thai - those apps!). Find simple Thai food at great prices. They are slightly off the radar and were the first takeout spot we ate at while moving here along with Asheville Pizza & Brewing.

🥢 Pad Thai Asheville – In the southwest corner of Asheville across from the Asheville Outlets, fall in love with Pad Thai's cute signs and vibrant murals. Order anything from beef and chicken pho and curries to Korean Woks, noodles, and pineapple fried rice.

Spotlight On Two Delicious Restaurants

Ooofff, Helene put life on pause for a lot of us, so I wanted to point out two new(er) restaurants from last fall that we finally made it to and loved:

Maguro in Downtown Asheville

Tom said Maguro might be his favorite sushi restaurant in Asheville, NC. It was that good. Choose from ramen, sushi, noodles, tapas, and more. It’s a large restaurant with great service next to White Duck Taco and across from Curate. Afterward, we dipped over for dessert and coffee at Old Europe. Old Europe is such a staple.

Juancho's Fonda in South Asheville

Tom and I tried Juancho's Fonda, a Colombian restaurant on Sweeten Creek Road. We both ordered the Lechon Al Horno (their write-up: roasted pork, veggie rice, arepa, avocado, and plantain). I loved my papaya juice with almond milk. Everything on the menu is gluten-free. My mouth is watering thinking about going back. It's a very unassuming, casual spot.

In the same plaza, Retro Coffee is super cozy with delicious drinks and local treats. I had to get some cardamom buns from Back Porch Baking Co. They have a little free library inside too.

There will be no Asheville Celtic Festival in 2025.

Lady Whistledown Of Asheville

In Asheville news:

  • While downtown, we confirmed that Dilbar was no longer in business. The Citizen-Times reported that the new underground Färməsē bar owners will open a farm-to-table restaurant there.
  • We've seen photos of Hail Mary, the new restaurant in the former Tastee Diner. It looks and sounds pretty cool.
  • The Craven Street Bridge that connects West Asheville and RAD has reopened.
  • The Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore has also reopened.

Upcoming

I will be updating our foodie posts as we await to see what trails open in Asheville. All Biltmore content is due for a massive overhaul too.

Let me know your favorite sushi spots and anything you want to know about Biltmore.
