๐ญ A Note About Being Grumpy On The Internet Because I Do Sometimes Cry Into My Coffee & Am A Real Person, Not A Punching Bag...I'm an Enneagram 9, so this gives me a lot of anxiety to write... Every piece of content you see from me costs time, money, and energy you don't see. Tom and I go to the places, eat the things, do the thingsโwith our own money, on our own time, across 7+ years of living here. A single post takes hours, sometimes months, to create. It gets consumed in under 5 seconds. That's not an exaggeration; it's a real stat. Content has stopped feeling like it has value, because there's so much of it and it's so easy to scroll past. It's also easier for people to be negative online versus say something kind. In one second, people tear a creator down for something that may have taken them weeks to make, full of heart, hard work, and good intent. Social media has been rough this year, and creators are feeling it. Trolls, AI, Copyright, flexing (yes, someone has lived here longer, hiked faster, eaten more, has redder tomatoes...), and comment sections with few kind wordsโit's a lot, literally every day. I respond to fewer comments than I used to. I don't want to become a "post and ghost" account, but some days I understand exactly why people do. I block trolls. I delete hate, and I used to babysit posts because some are that awful to our businesses. I want our businesses to succeed. We've lost so many since moving here. I turned off Facebook messaging this spring. Between the "my uncle's sister's brother's kid heard this place treats people badly" and the daily messages demanding three [insert food] restaurant recommendations on a Saturday morning before coffee because everyone is one hour away, with zero acknowledgment afterwards, it started to feel less like community and a bit like actual hell. And once, in seven years, if I say one thing someone doesn't 100% agree with, I'm now the villain. Commence verbally abusive messages. And let's be real, creators are super expendable, and people constantly remind us of it. โค๏ธโ๐ฉน So here's my ask: If something I've shared helped you, a heart/like, a nice comment, or a "thanks" goes a long way. Of course, you can always say thanks with a tip. But most importantly, kindly and respectfully share your favorites and experiences. No list is meant to be comprehensive. I rotate businesses to share the love. I enjoy seeing what you like, and we won't always agree; that's OK. Please don't trash another business or me in the comments/emails/DMs to elevate your favorite (and yourself). It's our regular Uncorked Travelers and not the random trolls, too, which stings. It's also not that serious. It's supposed to be fun. Beer, coffee, hikes, and food should not make anyone this mad or mean. Take it or leave it. Or leave. Scroll by. Unsubscribe. Unfollow. Block. No need to announce it. One last reminder: This is our home. The constant grumpiness taints living here. You aren't a "loyal follower," as someone once claimed, if you are "paying" my inbox with incessant complaints and so much negativity over free-to-you content. One person even emailed a list to tell me what I am and am not allowed to talk about. Y'all. And after this email, I may get a few replies telling me to go sh*t myself (using my chronic illness to intentionally hurt me) and that I'm the worst person in Asheville. It happens. Those messages will go unread and get deleted. You will be removed and blocked. Just like the awful comments and messages. It's unnecessary and miserable. "Misery loves company"โbut it is not in good company here. โ๏ธ ICYMI: Coffee, Coffee, CoffeeIronically, my transition to this final section is how I wrote a fun Gilmore Girls (GG) piece comparing Asheville to Stars Hollow. No regrets, but I received a few mean emails and commentsโone from a Hendersonville 'blogger'โabout how I'm falsely advertising Asheville, telling me my city is all "Trashville" and dangerous in a massive essay of hate... I'm telling y'all, it's rough out there, and it's not the city. BUT, you know I love coffee and GG, so in case you missed it, we showcased our favorite Asheville coffee shops:
